We want to make logistics tangible

Experience Champion Michael Schramm

MediaMarktSaturn is not just any retailer. On our journey to becoming the Experience Champion, our employees are the key to our success. Just as diverse and multifaceted as our company are our employees, their roles and backgrounds. They are our Experience Champions because they create a unique shopping experience for our customers. Here, they share their stories. This time: Michael Schramm, an expert in automation and robotics in logistics.

Michael has been working at MediaMarktSaturn for around three years and is responsible for the automation of our logistics operations across Europe. His aim is to make our supply chain processes more efficient and further enhance the customer experience.

“Our team is mainly focused on making logistics tangible. We ensure that products can be delivered easily to our stores and to customers’ homes.”

What this looks like in practice can be seen at our National Distribution Centre (NDC) in Göttingen. Whereas employees previously had to walk through the warehouse themselves to pick products from the shelves, the automated system now brings the goods directly to their workstations.

For Michael, however, automation is about much more than technical solutions. One of his greatest challenges is ensuring that people are brought along on this journey.

“To create a balance between people and technology, it is essential to communicate openly, be honest and provide a clear structure.”

David Fischer, Michael’s manager, particularly appreciates the fact that Michael not only talks about solutions but also develops them himself.

“I was really impressed when he solved a technical problem that we had been discussing for weeks by building a prototype in his garage one Saturday afternoon. And that prototype was actually implemented afterwards.”

Michael is just as passionate outside work. After playing football for many years himself, he now passes on his enthusiasm for the sport as a youth coach. He sees clear parallels between his work and the football pitch.

“In football, it is about teaching people to understand the sport. And at work, it is really about exactly the same thing. The only difference is that you are not teaching people about sport, but about technology and processes.”

Whether on the football pitch or working on the automation of our logistics operations, Michael wants to help people understand new things and develop further. Above all, he is characterised by his perseverance when it comes to overcoming challenges.

“That determination to keep going until you have found the solution – that is definitely something people can learn from him.”
