As a general principle, a more sustainable technology product consumes fewer resources and less energy – from manufacturing through to use. Washing machines are more sustainable if they use less energy and water, smartphones stand out through good repairability, and accessories through the use of recycled materials. In addition to environmental aspects, we also take social and ethical criteria into account, such as the protection of human and labour rights along the supply chain.
These are the requirements a product must meet in order to be labelled “BetterWay”: IT products must be assessed as sustainable by an independent external certification body (Blue Angel, EPEAT or TCO Certified). We label accessories with BetterWay if they hold a recognised recycling certificate such as the Global Recycled Standard. If there are no environmental labels from independent institutes for a given product category, we apply product-group-specific criteria that we have developed together with TÜV Rheinland Consulting GmbH. For large household appliances, we focus on energy efficiency, for smartphones on repairability, and for accessories on recycled materials. A prerequisite for carrying our BetterWay label is that a product is either rated as more sustainable by an independent certification body or holds a valid certificate confirming the product’s recycled content.
A product at MediaMarktSaturn is regarded as more sustainable if
- in the case of IT products, it is certified with a Type I ecolabel (for example Blue Angel, TCO Certified or EPEAT),
- in the case of household appliances, it is among the most energy-efficient products according to the EU energy label,
- in the case of accessories, it holds a recycling certificate.
